If you've never ordered food online in Malawi before, the first time can feel uncertain — what app, how much it costs, what to do if the food is cold or wrong. This guide walks through it end-to-end. By the time you finish reading, you'll be ready to place your first order.
What to expect
Online food delivery in Malawi works roughly the same way it does everywhere else: you open an app, you pick a restaurant, you choose dishes, you confirm an address and a payment method, and a rider brings the food to your door. The whole thing usually takes 30–45 minutes.
Two things that are specifically Malawian: cash on delivery is still the default for most orders, and coverage is currently strongest in Lilongwe.
Picking an app
Don't overthink it. Install one app, try it once, and only bother installing a second if you have a reason. We're biased, but we built Madyo because the alternatives weren't doing the basics consistently — hand-picked Lilongwe kitchens, employee riders, cash on delivery by default, and a real human you can reach if something goes wrong.
Placing your first order
- Open the app and set your delivery address. Pin the exact gate of your house — not just the area. This is the single biggest mistake new users make.
- Browse kitchens. The home screen shows what's open right now. Filter by cuisine if you know what you want.
- Pick a restaurant and tap a dish. Some dishes have options (size, sides, additions). Pick those, set a quantity, tap "Add to cart".
- Open the cart. Review what's there. Add a note for the kitchen if you want something specific (no chilli, extra napkins).
- Choose your payment method. Cash on delivery is the default and works everywhere.
- Confirm. The app will show an estimated time and start tracking the order. You'll see it move from "Confirmed" to "Preparing" to "On the way" to "Delivered".
Payment options
Cash on delivery
The most common. Have small notes ready — riders carry change but smaller notes speed up the handoff. If you're paying with a large note for a small order, message the rider in advance.
Mobile money
Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba are accepted by most apps now. Quick, no need to handle cash at the door.
Card
Available on some apps, but rejections aren't unheard of. Probably not the payment method to rely on for your first order.
What happens when the rider arrives
Most apps notify you a couple of minutes before the rider reaches your gate. The rider will either:
- Call you when they're outside, or
- Send a chat message in the app.
Meet them at the gate, confirm the order is correct, and pay if you chose cash. The whole exchange takes about 30 seconds.
If something goes wrong
Things sometimes go wrong — wrong dish, missing item, cold food, a late delivery. Use the support chat in the app first. Real services answer within a few minutes during business hours and will usually offer a refund, replacement, or credit depending on what happened.
Tipping the rider
Tipping isn't mandatory but it's appreciated, especially on rainy nights, after-hours orders, or long-distance deliveries. A small amount (MK 500–1,500) goes a long way for the rider's day.
